Super 8 was founded in 1972 by Dennis Brown and Ron Rivett as a hotel referral system, which was replaced with a franchise operation in 1973. The original room rate was US$8.88, hence the numeric brand name. The first Super 8, with 60 rooms, was opened in 1974 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, which still operates today as "Aberdeen Super 8 East".
Super 8 had a frequent traveler program, the VIP club, which was introduced in 1976; it grew to over 7.6 million members. The program was purchased by Hospitality Franchise Systems, which later became Cendant, in 1993. The VIP program was dissolved in December 2003 and replaced with the TripRewards program, which was renamed Wyndham Rewards in 2008.
Groundbreaking for the 100th Super 8 Location began in Aberdeen, South Dakota; the birthplace of Super 8.[2]
As per the 2006 Census reports, Super 8 Hotels Inc has 2,039 properties open with 123,982 rooms in the US and Canada.[3]
Super 8 now offers guests standard amenities at every hotel, including a continental breakfast, free high-speed wireless Internet access, hair dryers, coffee makers, and a lobby area. Some locations have pools and meeting rooms. A few of the larger Super 8's have restaurants. Competitors in the same price range include Econo Lodge, Red Roof Inn, Budget Host, and Motel 6. Super 8 has an 8-point promise regarding consistency in amenities and services for all of their locations,[4]
